ITN is the only research centre in Poland, working on the whole of problems associated with crude oil processing into petroleum products: transportation fuels, lubricants and special products.

The field of activity of ITN covers scientific research and development works, extensive research services, experimental production, and standardization related to the petroleum industry and petroleum products and their use.

In particular, the works and services include:

• analysis and technological evaluation of crude oil and petroleum products,
• crude oil processing
• processing technology of liquid fuels, lubricating oils, bitumen, greases and other petroleum products
• synthesis and evaluation of additives for petroleum products
• testing the performance of petroleum products and gas fuels
• research on combustion processes of liquid and gas fuels in internal combustion engines and industrial burners
• manufacture and the use of alternative fuels
• protection of environment in developing, manufacturing and using of petroleum products
• development and modification of modern analytical methods for testing of petroleum products and other chemical products

The above described activities are performed in 8 laboratory departments.
